Assam Agricultural University is the first institution of its kind in the whole of North-Eastern Region of India. The main goal of this institution is to produce globally competitive human resources in farm sector and to carry out research in both conventional and frontier areas for production optimization as well as to disseminate the generated technologies as public good for benefiting the food growers/ producers and traders involved in the sector while emphasizing on sustainability, equity and overall food security at household level.
During early 20th century, two research stations, one at Karimganj (1913) and the other at Titabar (1923) were set up basically to carry out research on rice and to produce trained field workers. Immediately after independence, a need for an agriculture and a veterinary college was felt leading to the establishment of the Assam Agricultural College at Jorhat and the Assam Veterinary College at Nagaon in 1948. Later on, in 1969, the Assam Agricultural University was established embracing both these two Colleges. Subsequently, the College of Home Science at Jorhat (1973), the College of Fisheries Science at Raha(1988), the Biswanath College of Agriculture at Biswanath Chariali (1988) and the Lakhimpur College of Veterinary Science at North Lakhimpur (1988) were established under the AAU. Presently another college of agriculture at Dhubri is under making.
